In New York.
In the ultra-competitive world of New York Politics, the path to success is often complex and challenging.
Having a good idea, innovative project or principled cause just… isn’t enough.
That’s where we’d like to think we “come in”: bringing a unique brand of Insider Knowledge and Influential Relationships, honed and harvested over two decades, at the highest levels of Government, Politics, Media and Labor.
Jenn Shafran
For almost twenty years, Jenn has worked at the intersection of Policy, Politics and Public Affairs, cultivating the deep relationships and institutional knowledge of City and State Politics essential to navigating government.
Prior to co-founding Green Book Strategies, Jenn was a top advisor to former NYC Mayor Eric Adams during his tenure as Brooklyn Borough President, as his Director of Communications and External Affairs, overseeing intergovernmental relations; communications strategy, legislative and policy coordination; media planning and engagement with elected officials, advocacy groups, issue-based constituencies and labor unions.
Jenn's experience in government began as Community Liaison, Communications Aide and Policy Analyst for NYS Senate Finance Chair Liz Krueger, where she honed her skills for organizing not only around the major infrastructure projects on which she worked, including the Second Avenue Subway and East Side Access Projects, but also on environmental, educational and civic engagement campaigns within government, working together with governmental colleagues. Building on this, she went on to serve the NY State Senate Democratic Conference as Director of Digital Media and External Relations, where she crafted, developed, implemented and trained each Senator and staffs on the then-emerging Digital Media Operations, building foundational relationships early on in a new space, which allowed for the creation of new opportunities for community engagement, both with their constituents and their colleagues in camaraderie, for Public Hearings, Community Forums and Legislative Pressure-Building Efforts
Jenn built upon her expertise in State Regulatory Processes through her next experience, with the Workforce Development, Training and Employment Initiatives she developed in her capacity as Downstate Press Secretary for the NYS Department of Labor. Thereafter, Jenn earned her Juris Doctorate Degree, with Concentration in Public Law, Regulation and Government Affairs from Yeshiva University’s Benjamin N. Cardozo School of Law.
From there, she went on the manage and lead on a significant portfolio of Government Relations pursuits in her time as Vice President for Government Affairs for Kasirer, working with both Corporate and Nonprofit Clients on Legislative, Procurement and Issue-Based Advocacy.
Austin Shafran

Working at the highest levels of Local, State and Federal Government, he successfully managed nationally recognized political and issue-based campaigns, harnessing his extensive experience leading strategic media relations and Labor Union initiatives. As a multi-skilled veteran of NY Politics and Government, Austin started his career in Public Service as Community Liaison to Former U.S. Congressman Gary Ackerman, before going on to work as Communications Director to the Finance Chair of the NYC Council and then serving as Press Secretary for the NYS Senate Democratic Conference and its political arm, the NYS Democratic Senate Campaign Committee (DSCC).
Following his time in the Council and State Legislature, he went on to serve in the Office of the New York State Governor as Deputy Commissioner for Economic Development as Vice President for Public Affairs at Empire State Development (ESD) and as a Speechwriter and Policy Advisor to the Governor.
Next, he went ventured into advocacy, serving as Legislative Director for the NYS Working Families Party (WFP), which led to work harnessing his skills in the private sector, consulting with Metropolitan Public Strategies (MPS), where he helped lead winning Communications, Policy and Advocacy Campaigns to Raise the Minimum Wage, enact Paid Family Leave, develop NY’s first Offshore Wind Project and pass transformative social and criminal justice reforms and craft national models for Affordable Housing, Economic Development and Transportation programs. Austin has developed and fostered relationships with and a reputation for being a leading voice on behalf of Labor Unions in NYC, including Green Book’s clients and friends, notably HTC, 32BJ, CLC and the Teamsters.
Jennifer and Austin Shafran don’t just share a house and two amazing children; they share a Passion for Politics, Press and Public Policy that can take your goals and make them a reality.
